Many thousands of miles to the east: across the Atlantic Ocean and across the wide democratic zone of Western Europe, the Iron Curtain is still there. Since receiving your invitation for this inaugural Crosby Kemper lecture, I have tried to piece together the story of Churchill's experience of Soviet communism - and of his reactions to that experience - in the 30 years leading up to his speech here at Westminster College and I thank you most warmly for having asked me to present the fruits of my researches to you on this beautiful Missouri afternoon.
